Tivyside at Lydstep
Sunday 15th April 2018
by Beverley Thomas

Tivyside will be hoping the weather treats this meeting a little more kindly than it did to their host hunt a fortnight ago on Easter Monday. The forecast is promising something better and the team are hard at work restoring the ground.

The Hunt member's race looks there for the taking and if Tiger Rag and Anna Lewis produce a clear round they are likely to be difficult to beat. Should Qulinas can re-find his 2017 form for Dai Rees he will certainly be another to keep an eye on.

The Conditions race provides an interesting selection; any of successful trainer David Braces entries would be likely to walk into the winner's enclosure and Hospital showed improved form a fortnight ago on the same track finishing second in the Ladies for Michael Bowen. Lukes Hill was running a good race when unseating at the last behind Thegirlfrommilan who if she repeats her performance from two weeks ago must have a credible chance. However, if Ruperra Tom's last run is to be ignored he looks to be the horse which could challenge all of the above, but form suggests he may need faster ground.

Twelve entries for the Maiden Conditions race provide a selection of un-raced debutantes two of which are produced by Michael Bowen for his mother Karen. Three others which capture the eye would be Violets Wish who has finished 2nd on two previous occasions, Stella Massini which finished 2nd on the course last time out and Darwin Dancer also placed in a recent Maiden.

If most of the entries in the Mixed Open declare the race will give punters plenty of choice. Desertmore View looks to be heading back to previous form and Isobel Williams has the pick of three nice rides for her Mother, Grandmother and Father in Get it On, Hold Court and Aerlite Supreme. Kelsey could certainly go one better than his fast finishing 2nd on similar ground two weeks ago. Frelia is double entered and if David Gibbs opts for Lydstep she will always be one with a strong chance.

The Conditions Novice Rider's race has several quite experienced novice jockeys including Isobel Williams and Connor Brace both of which have a selection of rides and on paper this looks a really competitive race.

Many will be rooting for Bobby Thomas and Padre Tito in the Restricted after his popular win a couple of weeks ago but he faces a more competitive selection of horses this week-end. Chasing Casey and Way Wild West are likely to provide the stiffest opposition; both are trained by Amber Mathias.

The concluding open Maiden looks and evenly matched affair but if Majinglane has recovered from a fall at the last fence when in second place last time out he could provide a serious challenge to the remainder of the field. However, if James King comes to ride Buy Me Out as suggested from the entries you would have to consider him most likely to ensure this horse is first past the post.

The first Race is at 2pm and there will be pony racing to follow.
