When autumn starts to give way to winter then we know it's pointing time and with the build up to the start of the season, along the new course at Dunsmore for the Club meeting near Silverton hosting the first of 25 scheduled for the Devon & Cornwall area, it is no surprise to have attracted some good quality entries on Sunday November 17. Six races are on offer with a start time of 12 noon. Over 50 entries have been received.
These include an Open Maiden for 4,5 & 6yr old's sponsored by the Tiverton Hotel, which is the opener for the day, with a strong entry of 13. Entries include an interesting debutant Queens Legacy for national champion jockey Will Biddick, I Prefer Diamonds for local trainer Robert Chanin, and two from Laura Thomas's yard Voie Dans Voie a six-year old who's previous form includes runner-up in a novice Hunter Chase at Taunton last February, and ex- Irish pointer Frank & Honest who looks to be the likely favourite having scored two seconds in Irish Points, the latest by a neck in May.
The Heltor-sponsored Conditions race has previous Cothelstone winner Hello George for 23 year-old owner/jockey Nathan Vergne entered. Hello George was previously rated 135 when in training with Phillip Hobbs. They could be taken on by nine-time winner Summer Sound (Francesca Nimmo) who under jockey Luke Scott made all when winning at Chaddesley Corbett on good going. Multiple Point-to-Point winner Hawkhurst for trainer Alan Hill is another to catch the eye having won ten of his 16 starts between the flags, although current connections may chose his entry at the Cottenham meeting this weekend as a preferred option.
The Roestone could be one to follow for local trainer Robert Chanin in the Luttrell Arms and Dunster & Porlock Weir Hotel - sponsored Restricted race and wouldn't need to travel far to score here, following upon their five length maiden win at Cherrybrook and previous bumper flat race win at Great Trethew.
Valley Constructions have sponsored the Mixed Open race in which Bishops Road for trainer Tom David sets the standard, having decent form with a Cheltenham Hunter Chase win under jockey Zack Baker who is currently working for Nigel Twiston-Davies and retains the ride here, of the eight entered they look to be the likely favourite. Don Bersey has previous hurdle form under rules and won an Open Point at Cothelstone by a distance under jockey Bradley Gibbs so could run well if turning up here. Rob The Getaway also looks an interesting entry on breeding and previous French form, he also holds an entry in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate race which follows.
Robin Why Not for trainer Joe Tickle is another entered in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate and could be well fancied on previous form with wins at Buckfastleigh and Trebudannon when ridden by Darren Andrews. Waterloo Warrior is an entry for trainer Jack Slater, and must be respected on previous form with two wins under jockey James King which include a twenty length victory at Kingston Blount.
Finally up is the Open Maiden sponsored by Gingerlands Livery, Cullompton, and of the nine entered the ex Irish import Frank & Honest mentioned earlier, with his previous Irish Point form for trainer Laura Thomas should be high in the betting, also Mountain Las now with trainer Sue Brown, for up and coming young jockey Tamby Welch could get their names among the winners today.
Along with the racing will be great catering facilities such as home made Moore's Pasty's, hot sausages and burgers from the local Silverton butchers, along with a pop up bar from Exe Valley Brewery.
The course offers a good viewing track to get close to the action, with on course bookies and trade stands.
Entrance to the course is £10 per person with children under 16 free.
