Four Burrow
Trebudannon
Easter Monday 6th April 2015
by Granville Taylor

THE car parks were overflowing and the packed holiday crowd enjoyed wall to wall sunshine and competitive racing at Trebudannon.

It was a great day for the Chapman family, based just a couple of miles from the course. Reuben Chapman won with three of his five runners, two of which were partnered by his son Ryan.

Reliable Richie set the ball rolling in the Hunt race, steered by Ryan to an easy success. The trainer recalled that he had, " Won this trophy just once before when Indian Raider beat Let's Fly quite a long time ago"

It wasn't long before his useful looking six-year-old Winter Garden followed in the hoof prints of Reliable Richie in a division of the two and a half miles Open Maiden. Dungarvan born Sean Houlihan took the mount this time to score his second career success. "We got Winter Garden from Colman Hennessy in Ireland. He is a lovely prospect and he has done lots of jumping at home," said the trainer.

"I have never had a double before," enthused Reuben after this success, but his double soon became a treble thanks to the concluding Maiden winner Myladtommy. "I have whipped in to the North Cornwall with this horse all season," reported Ryan, who was on board his genuine hunter to score his first ever riding double. The only negative was a fine by the stewards' concerning the use of the whip by the 30- year old rider, whose day job is a farrier.

Jo Buck followed up her Cherrybrook win on Saturday to make it three for the Easter weekend courtesy of a double on Academy General and Ziggerson Hill.

Academy General just held the rallying Mic's Delight to score by a neck in the colours of Duncan Odgers and Pat Shaw in the Confined, before the Jackie Du Plessis owned, bred and trained mare Ziggerson Hill just got the better of the pace setting Ned White in the Ladies'

The long distance "Cornish National" produced a three way finish with the sound jumping Kirkleigh (Tom Chanin) just holding off Ace High and Batu Ferringhi. "He was not himself on his last run at Chepstow and it has taken until today to get him back," said Robert Chanin, who trains the gelding for owner Sue Trump.

Tom Chanin went close to adding to Kirkleigh's win when his mount Wee Saxon just gave best to I'm All Set in the Restricted. Both the winner and the runner up are promising six-year-olds. Claire Hitch trains I'm All Set for her co-owners Keith Parkin and Philip Rawle, with jockey Jamie Thomas describing the winner as, "game, a nice sort who jumps for fun."

Four successful favourites gave the enthusiastic crowd something to cheer about, but the first division of the two and a half miles Maiden saw 20-1 outsider Torgamah Lad scorching round in a long lead to give George Hiscock his fifth career winner. The seven-year-old is owned and trained by Steve McCracken on Exmoor who said, "He ran unplaced a few times for Venetia Williams and I got him from Nigel Hawke."
