LUCY EDGES AHEAD IN LADIES THRILLER

Competitive racing on good going, enjoyed by a large Bank Holiday crowd would be the best way to describe the Banwen Miners Point to point meeting.

The ‘Ladies Open’ taking the prize for the most exciting finish of the day. Three horses crossed the line together, with South Pembrokeshire’s Lucy Jones and Fruitful Citizen getting the nod from the judge narrowly from Isobel Thompsett on Warsaw Pact, who was on his second outing of the day having already ‘Walked Over’ with John Norman aboard in the Members race.

This win sees Lucy go six points clear from her rivals in the West Wales Area Lady Riders Championships and with Charlotte Rhead’s Warsaw Pact collecting first and second place points on the day the Area Champion horse title will go right to the wire. With one race meeting left on the 6th June at the Pembrokeshire course of Trecoed the gelding is now tying with Dai Rees’ Rith Bob.

It’s been a very successful season for Clarbeston Road resident Dai Rees and a win in the ‘Intermediate Race’ for his Rimini, under regular pilot John Mathias, who himself is well clear in the Area Men’s title, means Dai now has the two leading ‘Maiden’ horses in West Wales.

Ruth Birt-Llewellin is trying hard to put pressure on the Novice Rider Title leader Nathan Deakin and her win in the concluding ‘Maiden race’ on her father John’s, Mister Trigger puts her within 2 points of the lead. She will be hoping she can keep her small string of horses sound and well for the final meeting.

Peter Bowen’s stable amateur Michael Byrne recorded a riding double on the day for trainer Robert Scrine, Overlut, in the ‘Men’s Open’ and Princess De Rome, in the ‘Restricted’ but the riding performance of the day must go to Bargoed’s John Llewellyn, who after a second last blunder in the ‘Confined Race’ on Jason Parfitts Turbulance, rode the remainder of the race without irons to deny Mathias on Balearic Star by one and a half lengths.

Racing starts at 2pm on the 6th June, the Pembrokeshire course at Trecoed near Letterston is signposted off the A40, those with a Sat Nav need SA62 5UN.
