LEADING Devon & Cornwall area jockey Richard Woollacott maintained his bid for the National Men’s title with a double at the re-arranged East Cornwall fixture at Great Trethew.

Woollacott, still sore following his Aintree Foxhunters’ fall on Thursday, just got Denis Underhill’s Lords Bridge home in the Mixed Open, taking over when Polinamix blundered at the last. “I had to give him a breather at the top of the hill, but always thought he would catch the leader”, reported the jockey, who also trains Lords Bridge. “He will be for sale at the end of the season and would be a good ride for a novice rider”, he added.

Woollacott took his score for the season to 17 when winning the Restricted on Bafaluto, who caught the tiring Portway Lane at the final fence. Jointly owned by David Congdon, Robert Jones and Mick Evans, Bafaluto was saddled by Pauline Geering. “He schools perfectly at home but is prone to the odd error in his races”, reflected the trainer afterwards.

It was a memorable day for 18-year-old Daisy Sharp who rode her first winner when Wreford Lake just got the better of the favourite Ten Pressed Men to win the Open Maiden. Now attached to the Frost stable, Daisy had a ride on the flat for Tom Dascombe before joining the Frost yard last September. “I was born in Lambourn and have been riding since I was eleven”, said the young jockey who has had only a handful of point-to-point rides this year.

Jackie du Plessis kept up her impressive strike rate for the season when saddling 12-year-old Kingsmill Lake to win the two runner Ladies’ Open. Her sole opponent Innocent Rebel looked a threat until the winner asserted two out to give jockey Jo Buck her fourth pointing winner of the season. “We may run Kingsmill Lake again next Saturday at Flete Park, but she is our best home bred mare and will have to go to stud soon”, said the Saltash based trainer, who owns the mare in partnership with her husband David.

The Patriarch Game drew clear from the top of the hill to land the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate under Josh Guerriero. The winner, sporting cheek pieces for the first time, won a bumper in Ireland and was bought by his trainer Tim Dennis last autumn. “He could go for the Exeter Final”, stated the Bude trainer, who handles the horse on behalf of the seven strong Swallowfield Partners syndicate. It was the start of a successful weekend for jockey Josh Guerriero who went on to ride three winners at Cothelstone on the following day.

Jimmy Cole’s Furmagiatt was left clear to win the first two and a half miles Maiden when the challenging Deimne came down at the last, and Cock of the Rock recorded a similar time when running on strongly to hold Jopero in the other division. The winner is owned by Guy Carstairs and Christopher Elletson, and is trained by Polly Gundry and Ed Walker. Suzy Berry was riding her sixth winner of the season on the five-year-old who is “likely to go to Doncaster sales next” according to Ed Walker.
