Great Trethew

Good going at Great Trethew attracted a total of 96 runners on a nine race card which featured doubles for jockeys Neil Harris and Ian Popham.

The visored Dare Too Dream initiated a double for Neil Harris in the Mixed Open. The 10-1 chance drew clear of his rivals from the third last to beat Sara Monica convincingly. The favourite Jalons Star was a disappointing third. Dare Too Dream is out of that wonderful mare Dubacilla, and is now trained for Mrs Anne Baker by Camilla Scott.

Harris completed his double to take his seasonal tally to five when Szeroki Bor just held Fort of Gold to win the Confined. The nine year old had won six times on the flat in Poland prior to a hurdles success at Huntingdon for Mark Pitman nearly four years ago. “He developed leg trouble and came to me two years ago from the Lambourn re-habilitation centre”, said owner/trainer Sue Willcock who is based at Mary Tavy.

18 year old Ian Popham, who works in the Philip Hobbs stable, took the first two Open maidens for 4 to 7 year olds for the Spaxton yard of Marie McGuinness. Raymond Barrow’s 4 year old Murdol won the first section comfortably. “We bought him as a 3 year old at Ascot and he was very immature when he came”, explained the trainer. “He had shown nothing on the flat, but he does everything we ask him”, she added.

The successful jockey and trainer soon returned to the winner’s enclosure when Arthur Parker made all to win the following race. This 7 year old is owned by Cyril Moate and started favourite. “He came from Jim Old’s yard and seemed too keen and couldn’t breathe properly in the past, but we have never had a problem with him”, said the trainer.

Duetto provided 22 year old Plymouth University student Samuel Callow from Yelverton with his first success as a trainer in the third division. Samuel is taking a sports degree and picked up his winner cheaply at Ascot sales just over a year ago. He was nicely ridden by the tall Sam Allwood, who is also based at the Hobbs yard.

5 year old Mr Bennett ran on strongly to take the final section. This gelding is trained by Ollie Jackson for his owner/breeder Brian Kilpatrick. 24 year old Danny Cook, based with David Pipe, was partnering his second pointing winner to add to his tally of five under rules. Tim Dennis was taken to Derriford hospital, Plymouth, with concussion after Golden Lizard fell heavily at the fourth in this race.

Polly Gundry consolidated her position at the head of the Ladies’ championship when the progressive mare Tot of the Knar drew clear from the top of the hill to win the Restricted, but Polly had to give best to Will White in the Confined maiden when Four of a Kind outstayed her mount Finally Sorted. The winner is owned and trained by Westcountry stalwart David Rogers at Newton Ferrers. “I must be creeping towards my 50th winner over the years” he revealed.

Kingsmill Lake, ridden by 18 year old Emily Noszkay, repeated last year’s Hunt race victory, but owner/trainer Jackie du Plessis feels that her mare is better going left handed.
