Flint & Denbigh Bangor on Dee basked in glorious sunshine on Sunday. There were some really exciting finishes and overall it was a good competitive days racing. Jonathon Turner, the chairman of the Flint & Denbigh point-to-point committee, was full of praise for all the hard work that the clerk of the course Ed Gretton and Andrew Malam, the head groundsman, had put into the course prior to racing. There was a thrilling finish to the Confined race; Master Of The Ward set out to make every yard from flag fall under Mathew Sollit and despite being headed twice on the run in, he got back up to win a thriller by a short head from Shraden Edtion under Charlie Huxley. The winner is trained at Cholmondley by Ginger McCain for owner Derek Malam who has four horses in training with McCain. The most impressive winner on the card was the Sheila Crow trained Go For Bust who won the Men’s Open under Richard Burton by an easy six lengths from Jakari, The winner is owned by Derek Pugh from Shrewsbury, who is great supporter of racing between the flags. Sheila Crow was delighted with the performance of Go For Bust when I spoke to her afterwards, she said, “He jumped really well today and the plan was to get him qualified for the Bangor Final, which he has now done. He will run mainly in hunter chases from now on. He is improving all the time and he should win more races.” It was good to see Malpas trainer Steve Wynne in the winners enclosure at his local course after Milesian King beat No Virtue by half a length in the Open Maiden race under a confident ride from Jonathon Jarrett. The Saddlers Hall gelding is owned by Mark Harris, which was his fifth winner of the season, all of which were with different horses. Wynne said that every time his charge had run before he had been fancied, because of all the good work he does at home on the gallops. The opening Members race went to odds on favourite In Hot Pursuit who beat Springwood White by a length and a half under Tessa Clark. It was hard work for the Presenting gelding who only asserted close home on the run in after strong driving from Clark, who was recording her first winner of the season. The winner is trained at Duckington, Nr Malpas by Anne Hewitt, who trained under rules for many years. In Hot Pursuit is owned by Marigold De Quincey from Upton Magna, who has two horses in training with Hewitt. Her other horse Nikilorr jumped the last fence in the Restricted a length up under Tessa Clark, but went down fighting by a length at the jam stick to Would Wouldn’t under Will Kinsey with Saddlers Scene was a further length back in third. Kinsey also trains the horse at Chester and he retains a quarter share in the gelding with Simon Parrington and Mark and Katie Caldwell. This was a good Restricted and the second and third horses past the judge will not be long in winning on this evidence. The Open Maiden was quite a decent contest, which went to the Steve Flook trained Granary House who stayed on well under Felix De Giles to beat Cregboy Lad from the Caroline Robison yard by three parts of a length. Land Lord from the Sheila Crow yard with her nephew Charlie Huxley in the plate, were a further 5 lengths back in third. Winning trainer Steve Flook said afterwards that the winner would have one more race before she goes to the Doncaster Sales. The Ladies Open produced one of the best finishes of the day between Sammie Beddoes on Home Made and Jackie Jarvis under Tessa Clark with the former prevailing by half a length after making every yard from flag fall. The Caroline Robinson trained Airoski finished fourth with the trainer’s daughter Imogen in the plate. This was her first ride in a point to point race, she had her 16 th birthday the day before. The winner is trained in Shrewsbury by Heidi Brookshaw for owner Pip Harney who is the joint master of the North Shropshire Hunt. Brookshaw, who rode the dam of the winner Inch Made between the flags said that the Bangor Final would be a possibility for her charge providing the ground was good on the day.
