EAST DEVON
ottery st mary 5th March
2005
by Lee Glanville
Galloping grey, Caspars Case,
trained by Richard Barber at Seaborough near Beaminster led the
men's open field from start to finish at the East Devon point to
point, where a huge crowd enjoyed the best conditions for several
years at the Est Devon point to point at Bishops Court, Ottery St
Mary.
Caspars Case was second on the
course in 2004 and this time provided the trainer, and rider Nick
Williams with the first leg of a second and third race double. They
followed up with Spuddlers Dream in the Intermediate, where their
challenger close home was Cornish trained Raregem, ridden by Will
Biddick.
The class horse in the ladies'
open shone through when Chloe Roddick produced Joyeax Royale,
running in the Penny family's Earthmover colours, to take up the
running on the final circuit, having been handily placed for most
of the race. Sir D'Orton (Charlotte Tizzard) had cut out most of
the pace and ran a good race to finish second.
Dominic Alers Hankey was another
rider in double form. He took both divisions of the maiden races
five six and seven year old horses. He deputised for the injured
Lucy Gardner on Mighty Mack, trained by Gardner near Exeter, in the
first division. In a close finish Mighty Mack got home by half a
length from Knighton Combe (Jamie Snowden). Dominic followed up
with the Tiverton-trained Dorans Girl in the second division, the
mare leading the field throughout. More will follow from both
second and third in this race - Simply Bruno (Richard Woollacott)
and the five year old Mokujin (Nick Williams).
There were huge smiles from
rider Naddan Wilmington and Dorset based trainer Ali Tory when
Maybe A Double crossed the line in front in the Restricted.
The horse has a great jumping
record, and has been no worse than fifth in six outings - since
winning her maiden at this meeting last year.
Buckfastleigh trainer Gordon Chambers admitted to being a little
disappointed with second placed On His Toes who rider Will White
thought had felt a bit 'flat'.
The Heard family were out in
force and their maroon and yellow colours were in the winners
enclosure with Josanjamic. The horse, owned by Ken and John, and
ridden by Liam, won Division One of the Restricted, benefiting when
the Barber/Williams combination, almost home for the third leg of a
treble with Smart Cavalier, capsized at the last. Josanjamic
recorded a three length win over long time leader The Quarry Man
(Jennifer Congdon) who should soon oblige in a maiden.
Rosie Clarke was having only her
second ride in public in the members' race on Chris Down's Wait For
This. She is head girl for the Cullompton trainer and put in a more
than competent performance but was truly up against it as the
winner was Polar Champ. Angie Malde's horse was recording his 26th
victory, having won £95,000 when campaigning under rules for
Martin Pipe.
