Pendle Forest & Craven at Heslaker
Saturday 5th May 2018
by Will Milburn

This weekend saw a double header of pointing in Yorkshire, starting on Saturday with the Pendle Forest & Craven near Skipton. Guy Brewer was the stable in form as they recorded a double, whilst there was also success from contenders outside of the area including the "Southern" Jack Andrews who took the opening Club Members race.

Snow Castle, ridden by John Dawson, was the first leg of Brewer's double, taking the Restricted. The pair were always travelling sweetly amongst the field of four and asserted close home to win and beat the Alex Fielding ridden The Sweetener. Formerly with Evan Williams, Snow Castle has now won twice and is progressing nicely, his only defeat in this sphere so far came behind the useful Matt's Commission, "I'm really pleased with Snow Castle after the tack slipped at Bedale... he was in training all summer so we might finish him and give him a good break to mature" said Guy who is in no rush with this son of Oscar and he can progress further.

Brewer's double was completed in the final race, the Novice and Veteran riders, where Shannon Silver backed up his win last time at the Bedale and again made all here under Billy Garitty to fend off the opposition, with Iron Chancellor back in second and Alta Rock third. The winner was winning for the second time this season after the application of blinkers, "Blinkers have definitley helped Shannon and the win at Bedale has done his confidence good. He jumps well so we might consider a hunter chase now" added Guy. It was also another victory for his rider Billy, who strengthened his lead in the Novice title and looks to have sealed victory in the division.

Another popular winner came in the maiden as the favourite Miss Carney was allowed to stroll to success. Narrowly behind approaching the last, the two leaders Rock Me Zippo and Tonganui ran out leaving Miss Carney to come well clear of High Hopper and Rory Bevin. The winner had looked progressive prior to this success, after a narrow defeat last time, and will now head to Doncaster's May Sale, "She's a lovely mare and has improved with each run, the track didn't really suit her but there wasn't much else for her... she'll make a very nice staying chaser with a summer on her back" said Will Milburn who had nothing but praise for the winner.

The Mixed Open saw a close finish between Garde Ville and One Conemara, however after a tussle from the second last, Garde Ville, who is owned and trained by Patricia Rigby, came out narrowly on top under Stephen Davies. The winner was winning this 3m5f race for the second year on the bounce and both the front two did well to carry large penalties, with the winner was having his third run in the space of two weeks.

The Hunt Members race saw an easy success from Forge Valley and Gemma Walton who also took this race last year and was a distance clear of the second horse Royal Benefit under Joe Wright, however it was not to be a fairy tale ending for My Old Piano who was struggling with a circuit to go and was pulled up under Jack Teal at the grand old age of 16.

The opening race, the 2m4f Club Members, saw the Midlands raider Coole Valley win under southern pilot Jack Andrews. The pair travelled sweetly to the lead and stayed on well to fend off Carlos Gardel and John Dawson who recorded another good second with third place going to Frontier Spirit and "Northern" Jack Andrews, who later travelled up to Hexham where he finished a very creditable second in the Heart Of All England hunter chase aboard Wizadora.
