DOUBLES FOR BRACE AND GIBBS

There were doubles for Connor Brace and Bradley Gibbs at the well attended Llangeinor Pentyrch Point-To-Point Steeplechases at the Dunraven Stud, Llanmihangel Farm, Pyle last Saturday. Brace, aged 16, grandson of David Brace OBE, on whose land the races are held on, was chalking- up his first ever double and could have made it a treble but for falling from Paint The Dream at the penultimate fence when leading the field a merry gallop in the open maiden race.

Connor's double was initiated when he took up the running two fences from the finish on his grandfather's Robin Des People in the three horse members' race to score by eight lengths from the Nick Williams ridden Desert Roe. Later in the day, on the 16.2hh eight-year-old bay
gelding Delkantra, he gained an easy 15 lengths win over the favourite Court In Flight (Bradley Gibbs) in the nine runner restricted.

Bradley, riding the Pip Hooley trained Sham From Milan, landed the young horse maiden. The winning distance was three lengths but the runner-up, Awesomedestination trained by Michael Bowen, was well off the pace on the first circuit and was let down by some indifferent jumping. Sham For Milan, a six-year-old son of Milan, has been placed in Ireland and is so easy to train that Ann Hooley, aged 72,rides him at home, "He's such a lovely horse" she said.

Bradley's second win of the day came in the open maiden race on David Vaughan-Morgan's seven-year-old grey mare Welliemix who also won the best turned out award. Welliemix, who bit her tongue during the race, had two lengths to spare over My Little Bud ridden by Charlotte Evans. However, the unlucky horse of the race was the four-year-old Paint The Dream who looked like giving his young rider Connor Brace a hat-trick until falling at the second last obstacle. Welliemix is trained by former successful rider Jonathan Tudor at nearby Merthyr Mawr which can be seen from the racecourse.

Michael Bowen's 12-year-old French-bred Sir Du Bearn, ridden by Regan Pallas from Narbeth who was chalking-up his first winner, took the conditions novice riders' race from the pacemaking itchyme'mScratch (Connor Brace), the official winning distance being five lengths. Sir Du Bearn, who was completing a five-timer, was chalking-up his 12th win and Michael said, "He was off for nine months through injury but he's just awesome and we might go for a hunter-chase at the end of the season." Winning jockey Regan, aged 18, rides out for Bowen and we should be hearing a lot more from him in the future.

Only three went to post for the ladies' open race and it was the outsider of three, the French-bred Tiger Rag, ridden by her owner/trainer Anna Lewis, who was successful finishing two lengths in front of last year's winner Watch The Birdie (Hannah Lewis) with Patricktom Boru (Jodie Hughes) a long way back in third and last place. Anna, aged 17, who is studying for her A Levels, is the daughter of Mark Lewis and Bridget nee Barton both former successful riders and from a great point-to-pointing family. There was not much between Tiger Rag and Watch The Birdie at the second last fence but the pacemaking Tiger Rag, given a cracking ride by his young rider who was only having her second ride in a point-to-point came to the aid of the ten bookmakers who were in attendance. A delighted Anna said on dismounting, "That was amazing, just great!"

Byron Moorcroft from Cowbridge celebrated his 30th birthday by winning the mens open race on Kevin Salter's ten-year-old bay gelding Spencer Moon who incidentally is a son of Dr Massini who used to stand at the Dunraven Stud. Spencer Moon, who was always prominent, came home a distance ahead of Kinari (James King) with Mr Burgess (Geoff Barfoot-Saunt) a further distance away in third and last place. Spencer Moon, who fractured an eye socket recently, is owned by Kevin Salter and trained by Kieron Price. Jeffrey Bird's Repeat Business joint favourite with Kinari was never going well and was pulled-up.

Daniel Lewis, aged 13, won the 138cms pony race on his Clear The Track and Lily Llewellyn, aged 15, took the 148cms race aboard Class Act.
