Hurworth at Hutton Rudby
Saturday 16th March 2019
by Will Milburn

The Hurworth point to point not only survived the weather this weekend but an early morning inspection and racing got underway at 1pm with the Hunt Members race. A new partnership this season is that of Joe Wright and Guy Brewer who have scored on several occasions already this year, Joe would go on to record a double and so would team Brewer, although Guys second winner was partnered by John Dawson, both John and Joe are sat in behind Will Easterby in the Yorkshire championships.

Joe Wright rode the most impressive winner on the day when Ravished absolutely bolted up in the Men's Open, the pair started to draw clear from five out and it never looked in doubt as this former decent performer scored for the first time in points "he needed the run at Sheriff Hutton and we think the flu jab knocked him a bit at Askham Bryan" said Guy Brewer who's charge was only beaten half a length last time and looks to be going from strength to strength. It was forty lengths back to the second which was filled by Roll The Dice and Will Milburn, whilst Will Easterby and Kings Lodge were in third with the latter maybe been unsuited by the soft conditions.

Joe's second winner came in the Restricted courtesy of the Joe O'Shea trained Mr Muldoon, a lofty reputation has followed this 6yo son of Rajj up to Yorkshire from O'Shea's Cheshire base. The winner led three out and began to stride clear to make it a clear cut victory and score by twenty five lengths "he's a nice a horse and he should improve further… he'll be better on better ground, he didn't really like that soft going" said Joe Wright who is third in Yorkshire's championship. Shepherds Cave was the next best home under Jack Jordan and a Restricted looks within his grasp after staying on well in the closing stages and beat Monsun Storm who continues to knock on the door in this grade for John Dawson.

The Confined went the way of the progressive Snow Castle and complete the double for Guy Brewer piloted by John Dawson, the winning pair had to battle hard though in the final stages and just got up to fend off the long time leader Rattle The Cage who looks to have stamina to burn under Will Easterby "we haven't got any immediate plans for our two winners...we're still in shock their in great form" said Brewer, third place went the way of Gameasapheasant who travelled strongly for a long way but found little when under pressure and maybe an easier track will see him to better effect.

The Ladies Open saw another win from Iron Chancellor and Jess Bedi, the pair were following up from the week before where they took the Ladies Open at Holderness and shows no stopping at the age of 14, it would also be Wizadora that would have to fill the runner up spot once again as he did the week previously, however the winner relished the soft conditions and battled on well up the run in "that was Chances (Iron Chancellor) 60th start! I'm not sure where we will head next, probably another point and then try a hunter chase" said Jess who was riding her sixth winner and is still eligible for the novice riders title and will no doubt have every chance.

There was a huge upset in the final race the Open Maiden as the 20-1 shot Impulsive Act scored for Robin Tate under Phil Armson who is making a name for himself now in the Yorkshire area despite been Midlands based. The pair battled hard to fend off the favourite Glassilaun and John Dawson with Alamgiyr in third and was making some what of amends after taking the wrong course the time before at the Holderness. Impulsive Act showed great promise on his racecourse debut back in 2016 when finishing third at Sheriff Hutton as a 4yo but failed to build on that since and has now finally fulfilled that potential.

The opening Hunt Members saw an effortless win from Neville Woods and Phil Greaves, it was never in doubt as the pair coasted along in front and gradually drew clear and defy his hefty 12st 10lb weight, Major Ridge and Emma Todd were second whilst Oscar O'scar were third under Kate Lowcock with wide margins separating them all.
