The fixture list has changed dramatically this year, with Easter falling much earlier than normal. The calendar has an unusual look to it and it will be interesting to see what the outcome of these changes will be.
The Harkway Club fixture provides its normal curtain raiser to our season, and following extensive publicity more people should be aware of the GHerbertBanks sponsored Harkaway Club Championship and the potential prize money on offer for the winning horse.
Didmarton will be the next venue on the agenda for local enthusiasts for the ever-popular Duke of Beaufort meeting. This fixture recovered the ground it lost following the problems encountered in 2006 and will need to build on that again this year.
The North Cotswold meeting at Paxford is the third meeting in the area and can expect its normal huge crowd despite its early appearance in the list but the course is capable of withstanding the conditions that sometimes prevail at that time of year.
The Croome and West Warwickshire fixture takes place at Upton-upon-Severn the following day and provides the second leg to what has been the West Midland Easter Festival. Falling as it does on Easter Tuesday the meeting attracts runners from far and wide, which can make finding winners difficult.
The Ledbury’s meeting at Maisemore Park takes place a day after the clocks go forward and that increase in daylight hours may be required to accommodate the large number of runners that always turn up for this meeting.
A week later, racing moves to the Cotswold fixture at Andoversford where there are always some close and exciting finishes. Fourteen days later we have The Lady Dudley Cup at the Worcestershire fixture at Chaddesley Corbett, where we look forward to seeing some of the best Pointers in the country competing for this prestigious trophy.
Proceedings then move south for the Berkeley meeting at Woodford. The going at this meeting is generally better than that found at other venues at this time of the year and that ensures plenty of runners and competitive racing.
The North Ledbury hold their fixture at Maisemore Park on May Day Bank Holiday. Although there is a crowded fixture list over this weekend, the course is better placed than most to provide suitable conditions.
The following weekend the Wheatland hold the third of four meetings at Chaddesley Corbett, which will enable horses to build up some points towards the Harkaway Club Championship.
The Clifton on Teme hold their races at Upper Sapey a week later, which provides owners with winning opportunities before our final meeting of the season when the Albrighton Woodland race at Chaddesley Corbett the following Monday.
