Axe Vale at Stafford Cross - Sunday 27th April 2008
Harry Derham on G Whizz, owned by champion NH trainer Paul Nicholls, won the 138 pony race at the Axe Vale Harriers point to point for the second year in a row. The ponies were tightly bunched until half way up the run in when G Whizz and Master Mink ( George Shaw) a previous Axe Vale winner, forged clear. Summertime Blaze and Chloe Grove were third, pushed in the closing stages by Champagne Charlie ridden by Pippa Glanville. Chloe's stirrup leather had come off as the ponies turned into the straight but she kept on driving for home nonetheless. Heidi Lewis won the prize for best ride. Jack Sparrow (Bryony Frost) was sent off at 8-1 on for the 148s but was
conquered by Dolphin Song (Lowri Allen) a long distance traveller from the Berkeley. A strong pace had been set by Josephine Gordon on Winnie but neither Bryony nor Lowri panicked and only a length split the two of them at
the line with Ivory Girl (Henry Armstrong) back in third.

Llangeinor at Laleston - Saturday 26th April 2008
by William Pugh
Considering the cold, wet weather we've encountered to date this season, the Llangeinor meeting enjoyed a welcome change with warm spring sunshine throughout the day. This attracted a bumper crowd and the good going ensured a full card of competitive races.

The 138cm race saw six runners go to post for this 6 furlong dash with Tipsy Rosella flying off to set a fast early pace. Patchy stayed in second for the majority of the race with Gypsy third, The Nipper fourth, followed by Rusty and Middler. Tipsy Rosella scored easily to give Jess Hegarty her second win. Gypsy, with debutante rider Olivia Tudor, battled well to take second, just edging out her good friend Claudia Hegarty, riding Patchy into third place. Rusty, who is only 11.3hh, showed good improvement from his first ever run the previous week at Pentyrch, to stay on strongly with the help of his rider Alice Tudor, to pass The Nipper for fourth.

The Nipper and Middler, ridden well by two more first timers, Lauren Francis and Elizabeth Francis (respectively), took the minor placings to a large cheer from the crowd and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The 148cm race over 9 furlongs was supported by only four runners this year, but all with solid win/placed form in 2008, thereby ensuring a very competitive renewal.

Our regional television channel, S4C, who have followed Welsh Point-to-Pointing for the previous couple of years, chose to cover this race as a feature to include in their forthcoming series 'Rasus yr Galum', (I can't speak Welsh, so I won't try to interpret!!). The camera team followed us on the course walk and interviewed the respective connections to each of the 4 runners, during the build-up prior to entering the Paddock.

Starlight Express, Tommy's Girl and Scary Mary had a good even break with Polly slightly behind and set off very quickly.

Starlight Express and Tommy's Girl played cat and mouse with each other in front for most of the race with Scary Mary and Polly threatening closely behind upto around 2 furlongs out.

The front pair drew clear and a hard-fought finish ensued with Starlight Express, ridden well by Rachel Leyshon just holding the persistent challenge of Tommy's Girl and strong rider Robert Williams.

Scary Mary stayed on to finish third with a stylish ride from Bradley Gibbs, followed by Polly closely behind in fourth ridden by experienced pony race jockey and hunting enthusiast, Thomas Watkins, (who is our highly regarded assistant whip and kennel man with Llangeinor Hunt).

A good day's racing for everyone involved.

1st Tipsy Rosella - Jessica Hegarty
2nd Gypsy - Olivia Olivia

Old Surrey Burstow & West Kent at Penshurst - Saturday 26th April 2008
The first race (Open race for ponies 138cm and under) was divided at the last minute to provide 2 exciting divisions. Seven runners, all with good form over this distance, went to post in Division 1. George Crate on the fast improving Covenham Generation was quickly away together with Charlie Marshall (Rio), Tabitha Worsley (Pennyway Tapdance) and last week’s winner Leah Wright (Wayward Polly Delight). The heavy ground in the middle of the course soon found out Rio and Wayward Polly Delight, allowing Tabitha and George to open up a useful 4-length advantage as they turned for home. But Charlie Marshall was not prepared to settle for third this week and he relentlessly set about his pony, managing to catch the leading pair as they approached the finish. In one of the most exciting finishes we have seen this season there was little to tell between the three of them as they crossed the line. Charlie’s efforts were rewarded with a win by a neck from Tabitha in second and George in third by only a head.

The second division was contested by the more typical hunting ponies (perhaps a little hairier than their division 1 counterparts!) and again we were treated to a nail biting finish. All were quick from the start but Sammy (Beth Giddings) and Quizzie (Quentin Wedmore) soon found their early pace was not sustainable in the heavy ground and so were dropped back by their jockeys. This left Katie Featherstone and Broomhills Sandmartin together with George Gorman (Jack) and Jordan Peerless (Rosie) to go on. As they met the rising ground towards the finish, Katie looked full of running and she drew easily away from the boys to win by a distance. There was a battle royal for second place, with George Gorman just prevailing by a neck with a demonstration of some determined riding. Jordan was hopefully consoled when he was awarded the prize for best potential jockey from all 3 races.

Ten went to post for the 148cm and under Open race. Despite ground conditions these ponies travelled extremely fast and fluently. As they turned for home the four contenders looked to be Freddie Mitchell (BobIII), Chloe Willett (Little Quaker), Jake Wright (Turtle Project) and Lizzy Norman who can never be discounted on the fast finishing Flash IV. Not one of the jockeys was prepared to give in and we had yet another exciting finish on our hands. The winning pony was Little Quaker (Chloe) by a neck from BobIII (Freddie) in a time of 1minute 22sec. Jake had to settle for third place by only a neck.

The next pony racing will be at PEPER HARROW (10 May) where the novice finals are to be held and at PLUMPTON RACECOURSE (11 May) for the Open finals. Please do come and cheer on the kids who have shown us so much sport this season.

Dartmoor at Flete Park - Saturday 19th April 2008

The Dartmoor Point-to-Point held at Flete Park hosted pony racing for the first time and, thanks to the Dartmoor Pony Club holding a racing rally during the Easter holidays, there were plenty of local runners, many of them racing for the first time. The 138 race saw runners bunched tightly throughout, but Hugo Hunt (Babe), the only one of the eight runners not eligible for the Devon and Cornwall points trophy, managed to slip two lengths clear of Chloe Grove on Summertime Blaze close home. Third was Victoria Sleep a further two lengths back on Diptford Melika. Fourth placed Hannah Welch on Super Ted was the best local rider and also won a prize, judged over both races, for having given her pony the best ride. Bryony Frost has had a great season in the 148s on Jack Sparrow and is clear at the top of the points leaderboard but Josephine Gordon pushed her all the way this time, riding Winnie II. The pair were locked in battle from the start, but Bryony managed to get home by six lengths drawing away on the final bend. Bronwen Buttery in third on Red Bull was best local, and fourth, fifth and sixth places were all taken by first time riders from the Dartmoor PC - Imogen Moody, Charlotte Brooks and Alistair Littlewood and racegoers hope to see them all back in action again soon. It was a brave decision by the committee to try pony racing at Fleet as it has such undulating terrain, but the course really made the riders think how to ride their race and they were helped by a great course walk from former national champion point to point rider Leslie Jefford. They will have another chance on May 3 when the Modbury Harriers host pony racing at their point to point, when it may be that the 148s start their race at the foot of the hill.

East Susex & Romney Marsh at Catsfield - Sunday 13th April 2008
After two weekends of lost racing a good crowd of enthusiastic jockeys, ponies and supporters arrived to enjoy the sunshine at Catsfield. By very kind permission of the Jockey Club, Meeting Secretary and the Start Team, four pony races took place. Owing to some soft patches on the original pony racecourse it was decided to use the more consistent ground along the back straight and to run the pony races “backwards”. 8 ponies contested the 138cm and under Novice Combination race with many making their seasonal racecourse debut. Unfortunately, Rivenhall Playboy whipped round at the start, depositing Charlotte Cheesman and the loose pony accompanied the remaining runners. Rebecca Cushen on the much improved Molly, took up the running as they came down the hill towards home, hotly pursued by Hannah Miles on Bellhurst Andrus, Charlie Marshall on Pete and Sophie Thorbeck on Satanta. As the riders negotiated the gap before the climb for home all did well to keep the loose pony in their sights. Rebecca Cushen held on to the lead from a fast finishing Hannah Miles. Charlie Marshall held a tight racing line to take third with Sophie Thorbeck only 2 lengths behind in fourth. An enthusiastic crowd then gave a tremendous cheer for the final finishers on their wonderful hunting ponies – Romney Hole on Fudge, Quentin Wedmore on Quizzie and Flora Hickish on Lucy.

Having been checked by the doctor after her fall in the first race, Charlotte Cheesman was quickly legged up onto Kylemore Shiloh for the Novice Combination 138 to 148cm race. No problems at the start here and four runners were all quickly away. Gemma Cobb on Cherubino soon opened up a tremendous lead, which she held to the end unchallenged. Charlotte took second place and there was a great competitive battle between the two sisters, Sophie and Martha Knight on their magnificent skewbald hunting cobs for third and fourth with Martha just prevailing by a length.

The Open 138cm to 148cm race was set to be an exciting re-match between Aaron Chave on Tenants Super and Lizzie Norman on Flash IV with Ozzie Wedmore and Fleeting Image the wildcard amongst the entries. All three were away to a very quick start but as they came down the hill, the two more experienced ponies were able to pull away from Fleeting Image. Through the gap, Lizzie Norman held the inside line but was just unable to make up the deficit and Aaron crossed the line first by a neck to continue his pony’s unbroken record this season.

Not to be outdone by the bigger ponies the 138cm and under ponies also gave the punters a terrific race. Charlie Marshall on Little Tinker was quickly away from the start and there was little to tell between all four ponies as they raced down the hill. George Crate and Covenham Generation, who had raced only the day before at Ascot, looked fresh and full of running as they came through the gap towards home but Charlie drove his pony to the line to win by xx lengths. A tremendous effort by Charlotte Cheesman who took third place on Hayne Valley Peek-a-boo - her third ride in less than an hour, an achievement not matched by any of our adult jockeys! Hugo Pearson Wood partnered Rio for fourth, his first outing on Charlie Marshall’s pony.

Ledbury at Maisemore Park - Sunday 13th April
Two West Midland area point to point meetings have had to be rearranged due to adverse weather conditions. The first rearranged meeting was the Cotswold at Andoversford on Wed 9th April closely followed on Sunday 13th April by the Ledbury Hunt fixture at Maisemore Park. Both meetings were well supported by our Pony Racers, for which we are all grateful.

The Ledbury meeting on Sunday 13th April drew a large crowd to watch the 9 scheduled races plus 2 Pony Races. There was a tense moment when it was thought the pony races may be delayed due to a faller on the course but fortunately this was not the case.

The 138cm race was closely fought. Jamie Brace had to sit tight on an excitable Purple Haze at the start. Once started Highmead Chatterbox led the way to win but 5 ponies finished the race almost together. The Judges had a difficult job.

The 148cm race was dominated by Tommy’s Girl and Robert Williams visiting from Gelligaer Farmers.

Eggesford at Upcott Cross - Saturday 12th April 2008
Pony racing fans enjoyed a close finish in both of the races at the Eggesford point-to-point on Saturday, 12th April despite very wet ground. It was the first time the meeting had held pony racing.

In the first 138 race, Hugo Hunt from the Cattistock enjoyed a win on his Babe but only got home by a neck from Tom Dalton-Morgan on Diptford Trina.

Three lengths away in third was George Shaw, another Cattistock visitor.

All three ran well to beat Summertime Blaze (Chloe Grove) into fourth place.

In the 148s there were a disappointing four runners, and Champagne Charlie gave his rider Pippa Glanville a hard time from the start as he hated the deep going. No such problems for the other three who broke clear but Robert Hawker on Charm II and Josephine Gordon on Winnie II couldn't get past a tenacious Bryony Frost on Jack Sparrow. Bryony's pony had a busy week as he had also been successfully showjumping at Combe Park.

The Croome and West Warwickshire Hunt point to point at Upton on Severn on Tuesday 25th March saw the West Midland area Pony Racing season off to a good start. It was also a very early start for all the pony racers as we were all on site by 8.00am!

The races were full and both had attracted ponies and jockey who had never raced before. The 138cms race was very closely fought between Purple Haze (Jamie Brace) and Highmead Chatterbox (Russell Slatter). It looked like a dead heat but Highmead Chatterbox was named the winner. This was Russell’s first ride having recently taken over the ride on Highmead Chatterbox from his brother.

The 148cms race was very competitive. Catchematit (Leo Mahon) led from the start and although challenged by Dolphin Song (Lowri Allen) and The Duchess (Charlie Nash) stayed on to win.

The three youngest riders all from The South Pembs Edward Andrews (10), Tom Kinnear (9) and Abigail Meyrick (10) delighted to have tried racing for the first time

Large crowds braved a Northerly wind to stay on for the two pony races at the end of a good day’s racing at Lydstep on Easter Monday. The going was officially good, firm in places. The 138cm ponies had 8 runners all looking very professional in the paddock were led down by the Huntsman Simon Jones to the start with their backs to the open ditch at the far end of the course by the railway line, they were sent off by Mr Haydn Mathias both the starter and the new chairman for 2008. The ponies were still together at the first bend and then strung out going up the hill, after the final turn for home Oscar had a convincing win. All 8 ponies flew across the line in fine style.

The big ponies had the maximum field of 10 runners and had to start at the top of the course nearest to the sea, to go down and around nearly a full circuit. Arguably the best race of the day with a very exciting finish, with just 1 ½ lengths between the first 3 ponies. Well done to all of the riders who have very obviously put in a lot of training to get their ponies racing fit.

Many thanks to Mr Will Pugh who entertained the children by doing the course walk and passing on some good advice from his 17 years experience in point-to-point riding.

Pony Race Officials on the day were Will Pugh, Sally Kinnear, Rona Muscett and Anna Evans.

A big thank you to the two Sponsors of the Pony Races.

The 138cm race was well supported with 7 out of the 8 runners hoping to open their accounts for the Hackwood Novice Challenge. Experience paid off though as the only non novice, George Shaw riding Master Mink was first across the line just holding off Lucy Duncan on Copper Thistle who notched up her third 2nd place in only three runs and looks good to improve in the near future. Hard on their heels were Joshua Thompson on Balfour Tia Dora and Ned Curtis on Lennerds Dior. A few lengths off the pace Henry Fuller on Bobby finished a clear 5th while the remaining group battled it out to the line with Frances Lund on Foxlynch Rob Roy 6th followed by Eliza Hamilton-Fairley on Jimma and Harry Davidson on Cracker.

A very local 148cm race produced a small but strong field with 3 out of the first four from the Vine and Craven Hunt. Currently heading both the Sandhurst Area Championship and the Sandhurst Local Rider Championship, Freddy Tett on Jethro went quickly into the lead, hard pushed by Page Fuller on Foxlynch Eriba. Three furlongs out Amber Woodhouse on Sambuka and Brendan Powel on Seran Springs went into 2nd and 3rd but never had a touch on Jethro who finished 4 lengths ahead of them with Foxlynch Eriba still running on 4 lengths further back and Albert Chandler on Janios Little Jupiter finishing a creditable 5th. Freddy Tett then leapt into a fast car to Lockinge where he rode his other pony for her first ever race and his second win of the day.

EAST ANGLIAN PONY RACING REPORTS AND RESULTS

Ups and Downs of the Easter Weekend

Edward Twinn continued his successful run by winning the 128cms & under pony race at the appropriately named High Easter on Easter Saturday. Getting a good start he made all to win by 10 lengths from India Taylor (Dykebeck Wild Bramble), Kia O'Hara (Bureside Snickers William) and fourth was Milly Ainsworth who qualified with the Essex & Suffolk having her first ride on Debden Pollyflinders. The 138cms & under saw the closest finish of the day with Bridget Andrews (Clonross Polly) just holding on from the fast finishing Charlotte Wyatt aboard Sebastian, who qualifies with the Dunston Harriers. The much improved Skylark under Jack Vestey was third.

For the first time this season there was a 148cms & under pony race at Marks Tey on Easter Monday. The West Norfolk qualified Smoking gun (G. Wales) finished 4 lengths ahead of Pepsi (B. Andrews), Midsummer Son (T. Darlow) was third with Shelley Birkett having her first ride on Busy Miss Lizzie in fourth place. Shannon Slender was unfortunately kicked on the way to the start and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle - we wish her well. The 138cms was hotly contested and provided a first win in pony races for 9 year old Jack Andrews aboard Clonross Jessie who just got her head infront on the line from Daisy Taylor (Cwrt-y-Betty Vocalist) with Alex Chadwick (Crosswell Robbie) 6 lengths behind in third place. Tom Collier who qualified with the Granta Harriers was having his first ride on Days of Thunder.

Ashford Valley at Charing
Easter Saturday 22nd March 2008

The weather was certainly the greatest test for all the pony racers on Saturday at Charing as freezing temperatures were accompanied by a biting wind and intermittent hailstorms. Proving themselves to be a hardy bunch, six novice riders went to post to contest the 138cms and under race. Rebecca Cushen, having her first ever ride, remained admirably calm as she was led to post on the excitable Molly. She also demonstrated some real skill to stay aboard as Molly plunged through the start to take up the rear of the field. Hugo Pearson-Wood on the ever-improving Ninfield Millionaires Delight, Joshua Thompson on Balfour Tia Dora and Chloe Durkan on Barndale Playtime soon broke away from the slightly heavier built ponies. However, Megan Wrenn and Freddie together with Sophie Thorbeck on Satanta showed their determination as they galloped gamely across the skyline. Rebecca Cushen soon had Molly settled and they quickly made their way into mid division leaving Megan and Sophie to fight it out for the minors. At the final bend there was little to tell between Hugo and Joshua, but the last hill started to tell on Balfour Tia Dora who despite the determined urgings of his jockey could not make up the deficit. Ninfield Millionaires Delight crossed the line first to give Hugo Pearson-Wood his first victory, with Joshua in second, and Chloe in third. The distances were 9 lengths and 3 lengths in a time of 2.05 mins

The 148cm and under Open race certainly looked to be hotly contested and we were not disappointed. Fleeting Image under Oswald Wedmore was the first to show with the experienced ponies Flash1V (Lizzie Norman) and TLBM (Hector Worsley) in the leading group together with Maryann Cushen on Strongbow, Stewart Wright on Royton and Tabitha Worsley on Chukka. The early pace was a little quick for the likes of Martini (Sophie Knight) and Topper (Martha Knight) who were settled comfortably at the rear by their jockeys. Fleeting Image led the field down the hill until Oswald found he had no more to give and conceded the lead to Strongbow, Flash and TLBM. Lizzy Norman could not close the deficit in the final stages and Maryann took first place, Lizzy second and Hector third. Stewart on Royton took fourth place and Tabitha fifth. The distances were 8 length and 2 lengths in a time of 1.51 mins. The race of the skewbalds at the rear of the field was won by Sophie Knight on Martini who crossed the line narrowly in front of her sister.

Reversal of Fortunes in Pony Races

Following the seven race Point-to-Point card at the Fitzwilliam Point-to-Point at Cottenham on Saturday, a large crowd braved the rain to watch the Pony Races and were well rewarded by two very exciting finishes.

The same ponies and jockeys contested the 128cms & under race as did at Ampton the week before, but this time racing a furlong further on a flat course. Knapaton Windrush, a slow starter at Ampton, was very quickly into his stride with India Taylor on Dykebeck Wild Bramble in hot pursuit and last week's winner Bureside Snickers William and Grouse a couple of lengths off the pace. Although Bureside Snickers William got into contention at the last bend, he only managed to get his nose in front of Dykebeck Wild Bramble for second place with Knapaton Windrush under a strong, first winning ride from Edward Twinn coming home 25 lengths ahead of the field.

The 138cms & under pony race saw ponies from afar a field as The New Forest and Heythrop Hunts, one of which Red Pepper having won their pony race last week at Kingston Blount. The novice Clonross Polly jumped away smartly with Crosswell Robbie and Cwrt-y-Betttys Vocalist heading the remainder of the field. At half way Crosswell Robbie began to fade and Red Pepper joined the leaders. Coming around the last bend with 1.5fs to go, a head to head battle developed between the three leaders. Bridget Andrews drove Clonross Polly strongly to the post finishing 1.5 lengths ahead of Red Pepper who put his head in front of Cwrt-y-Bettys Vocalist and Daisy Taylor on the line.

West Street Tickham at Detling
Saturday 8th March 2008

A cold and blustery day greeted pony racers at Detling where the West Street Tickham Hunt were kindly staging their first pony races. The Novice Combination Race was well supported with 10 going to post. Fast ground ensured an early good pace with Kylemore Shiloh (Charlotte Cheesman), Pennyway TapDance (Tabitha Worsley) and Rhoden Zukini (Elliot Pickering) making the initial running. In good contention at the early stages were Ninfield Millionaires Delight (Hugo Pearson-Wood), Lockland Loulabell (Phoebe Kindersley), Huttons Ambo Nemesia (Toni Silverstein) and Royton (Stewart Wright), with the small and brave Zebedee (Katie Featherstone) comfortably whipping in behind. As the field approached the bottom turn they became more strung out and at this point Strongbow (Maryann Cushen) began to make headway. Maryann rode a well judged race and kicked on to beat Kylemore Shiloh by 6 lengths in a time of 1.58mins. Third was Tabitha Worsley on her pony’s debut doing well to finish only 20 lengths adrift in the company of the larger ponies. Maryann, Charlotte, Tabitha and Hugo (who was fifth overall but second of the 138cms and under ponies) all lose their Novice status with these rides. Congratulations to all.

The Open Race saw five runners going to post , all who had good current form. First to show was Top Star Surprise (Frankie Hickman) who set a blistering pace and was chased in the early stages by Flash 1V (Lizzie Norman), TLBM (Tabitha Worsley) and Little Quaker (Chloe Willett). Charlie Marshall on the only small pony in the race galloped gamely behind. At the bottom bend and as the ponies hit slightly slower ground, the early leader began to tire allowing Chloe to take up the running. As the field turned for home Little Quaker ran wide and it was almost impossible to split the first 3 (Chloe, Tabitha and Lizzie) as they raced for home. Lizzie on the fast finishing Flash 1V could find no room on the run in and Chloe crossed the line first in a time of 1.56mins with TLBM only half a length down and Lizzie half a length back in third. Little Tinker plugged on to take fourth but books his place in the Open final as the only 138cm and under participant. A Stewards Enquiry was held regarding the racing line taken by Little Quaker but it was deemed that the route ridden did not give any advantage and the result stood.

Dart Vale & Haldon Harriers at Buckfastleigh
Sunday 9th March 2008

Close finishes were the order of the day at the Dart Vale and Haldon Harriers pony races at a wet and cold Buckfastleigh on Sunday.

Eight went to post for the 138 cm and under race and there was a great battle between early leader Chloe Grove on Summertime Blaze and eventual winner Robert Williams, who travelled down from the Gealligaer Farmers Hunt in Wales, on Oscar. Oscar eventually pulled ahead to win by five lengths and Summertime Blaze held on despite a great late challenge from Hannah Welch on Superted. Ten year old Victoria Sleep was fourth on Diptford Melika. There was also a blanket finish in the seven runner 148cm and under race,

The riders having to endure the worst of the conditions with cold driving rain. Bryony Frost has reigned supreme at this height with Jack Sparrow but she had to settle for second behind Robert Williams who doubled up on wins with Chucka. He got up by one and a half lengths with Henry Armstrong just two lengths third on Ivory Girl. Robyn Morris, 15, was fourth on Godlee Amarino.

Suffolk at Ampton
Sunday 9th March 2008

The first of the East Anglian Pony Races were held at the Suffolk Point-to-Point at Ampton this afternoon. A good crowd arrived early at the course to watch the two hotly contested races, the first of which was restricted to ponies 128cms and under. Bureside Snickers William took an early lead from Dykebeck Wild Ramble with India Taylor on board but turning for home Knapaton Windrush who had a slow start was relentlessly cutting back the deficit under Edward Twinn. In the last half furlong a head to head battle developed between Bureside Snickers William and Knapaton Windrush with the former just holding on to win for Kia O'Hara.

8 went to post for the 138cms & under race. Buster, qualified with the Dunston Harriers, lead from pillar to post, an easy victory for the winner of the 2007 Pony Race final at Fakenham. Some eight lengths behind the rest of the field were being rousted up the hill by their young jockeys with Daisy Taylor and Cwrt-y-Bettys Vocalist just taking second place from the novice Clonross Polly and Bridget Andrews.

Sunday 2nd March 2008
Grove & Rufford at Welbeck

Pony Racing at the Grove & Ruffford Hunt Point to Point held in the beautiful grounds of Welbeck Estate by kind permission of Lady Anne Bentinck.  The going was good and it was a beautiful day, although a little cold.  There were 2 mixed height races for the ponies which were run at the end of the main horse racing.

The first was 5furlongs for Grove & Rufford Members sponsored by a local company who hunt regularly.  We had 5 entries, all who are regularly seen out hunting on Saturdays.   This made the competition fun, but a little stronger especially with two sisters competition against each other.  Results were 1st Emma Garner on Jack, 2nd Jessica Garner on Pepper, 3rd Amy Bere on Nutmeg.  All had a good race coming back in one piece, ponies in a fit condition and children with big smiles on their faces.

The second race, again kindly sponsored by a local company who regularly hunt.  We had 7 entries in this 7furlong race coming from as far a field as Stratford Upon Avon to Northallerton to Shropshire.  This was a very exciting race with a very tight finish.  Results were 1st Gemma Tutty on The Bossy Hobbit, 2nd Leo Mahon on Catchement, 3rd Annabel Dalton on Adrians Pride.

Northern Racing College very kindly walked the course and briefed the riders putting their minds at ease, and eliminating nerves.

Southdown & Eridge at Godstone
Sunday, 2nd March 2008

The Novice Riders Race was this week restricted to ponies 138cms and under and a full house of 10 ponies went down to the start. Once off, the riders were quite quickly spread out with Covenham Generation (George Crate), Springcroft Red Admiral (Martin Otway), Balfour Tia Dora (Josh Thompson), Barndale Playtime (Chloe Durken) and Ninfields Millionaires (Hugo Pearson-Wood) breaking away from the remainder of the field and going on. As the riders approached the final bend these five all remained in contention. George Crate kicked on at this point and was an easy winner from Martin in second, Joshua 3rd and Chloe 4th. The distances were 2 lengths and half a length. All the novice riders rode with extremely impressive style and it was particularly commented on how well mannered the children were at the start – well done to you all.

The Open Race had 6 runners and all were larger ponies. These experienced jockeys jumped off with impressive speed and 3 broke quickly away . The already double winning Flash 1V (Lizzy Norman) looked to be having an easy ride against Tenants Super (Aaron Chave) and Fleeting Image (Oswald Wedmore). As they turned for home Fleeting Image was found to be struggling with the pace and Lizzy and Aaron soon drove well clear. Although already flat to the boards, Tenants Super was not for giving in and it was almost impossible to split the two leaders as they approached the line. Despite losing his entire leather and iron at the corner Aaron rode very courageously to prevail by a neck. Ozzy finished 3rd a distance behind with Clementine Richardson 4th, Heidi Sellar 5th and George Gorman on the heavy weight Jack a very popular 6th.

Attention: South East Pony Racers & Parents!
Well done to everyone at Godstone on Sunday, 2nd March – it was super to have such well behaved and polite jockeys taking part. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

If however you do have a complaint, criticism or suggestion please, please do make yourselves known to Helen Sarchet direct (see South East Area Website: http://www.pointingse.com/) and we will do our utmost to quickly resolve any upsets. With regard to the course walking, please note that the children are accompanied by experienced jockeys, who can give them the best advice on riding each course. Where a jockey parent has kindly volunteered to walk the course with the children they are never with their own child’s group. If you do have problems in the paddock and are subsequently accompanied to the start without prior permission, please could parents make sure that they disappear from the start immediately? Our experienced start team is extremely capable of handling any “fizzy” pony and it is dangerous and against the rules to have extra adults on the ground.

See you all at Detling!

Sunday 24th February 2008
South East Hunts Club at Charing

There were a large number of entries for the Novice Combination race and, with the consent of the Jockey Club, the organisers kindly agreed to dividing the race. Division 1 was for ponies 138cms and under and 5 runners went to post. A blistering pace was set by Elliot Pickering on Newoak Second Thought and Charlie Marshall on Little Tinker and these two went quickly away from Freddie (Megan Wrenn), Pippin (Poppy Hole) and Rivenhall Playboy (Charlotte Cheeseman). Throughout it was almost impossible to separate the two but with Elliot holding the inside line he went on a length at the final bend. But Charlie Marshall was not to be defeated and the pair rode a very impressive finish with Little Tinker prevailing by a neck in a time of 2 minutes. Charlotte Cheeseman rode a determined race to finish 3rd only 12 lengths off the pace on her new pony, with Megan Wrenn in 4th and Poppy Hole 5th.

Novice Combination Div 1  138cm & under
1.Little Tinker - Charlie Marshall
2.Newoak Second Thoughts - Elliott Pickering
3.Riverhall Playboy - Charlotte Cheesman
Dis. Neck & 12l time 2min

In Division 2 for ponies 148cms and under 8 runners went to post. Huttons Ambo Nemesia (Toni Silverton) was a non runner in this race owing to transport problems. This race was difficult to call with all but 1 of the entries making their racecourse debut. Little Quaker (Chloe Willet), Fleeting Image (Ossie Wedmore) and Chuckka (Hector Worsley) opened up an early lead with the remainder of the field well bunched 6 lengths behind. As Chloe stepped up the pace the field became a little more strung out. Chloe was an easy winner in a time of 1min59secs with Ossie 2nd by 10 lengths and Hector 3rd.

Novice Combination Div 2
1.Little Quaker - Chloe Willett
2.Fleeting Image - Oswald Wedmore
3.Chuccka - Hector Worsley
Dis. 10l & 3l time 1.59min

With the wheels on her wagon fixed, Toni Silverton arrived at Charing and joined the Open Race to make it 9 runners at post. Gemma Cobb (Cherubino) was eager to take up the running and coming down the hill went on by 10 lengths from TLBM (Hector Wosley) Flash IV (Lizzy Norman), and Kylemore Shiloh (Tom Cheesman) who was held up mid division. The smaller pony Goldsborough Moonlight Mist (Tabitha Worsley) was also well up with this main group. As the bottom corner approached Cherubino started to tire allowing TLBM to sneak the advantage. Hector Worsley looked to have the race in the bag until his stirrup leather was lost at the second last and from seemingly nowhere Lizzy Norman bypassed them all and drove Flash to cross the line first in a time of 1min 51 sec. TLBM finished 2nd by half a length with Cherubino in 3rd and Shiloh in 4th. Goldsborough Moonlight Mist ran a very game race to finish 5th (first 138 cm and under pony). Elliot Pickering, who suffered a broken stirrup leather as he crossed the line was none the worse for his fall.

Mid Surrey Farmers Drag at Godstone

Despite a frosty morning the SE Point to Point pony racing series got under way at the Mid Surrey Farmer Drag meeting at Godstone in glorious sunshine. The first race was for Novice riders ponies148cm & under, a full house of 10 going to the start which was slightly missed by CHAMPLERS SPRING FEVER and new jockey Aaron Chave but quickly made up the ground to then make all, despite a last minute run from Frankie Hickman having her first ride in TOP STAR SURPRISE to win by a neck. BARNDALE PLAYTIME formerly know as Barney Rubble ran well to take 3rd for his new jockey Chloe Durkan, with BROOMSMELL SANDMARTIN finishing 4th for Kathryn Featherstone who has taken over the ride from older sister Emily.

In second an Open race for ponies 148cm and under 7 went to post, CHERUBINO - Gemma Cobb, GOLDSBOROUGH MOONLIGHT MIST – Tabitha Worsley & RIO (formerly known as Red Hot Rio) – Charlie Marshall went of in front, NEWOAK SECOND THOUGHT –Chloe Willett and RHODEN ZUKINO were slow away from the start and never managed to make up the ground. Mid Devon at Black Forest Lodge

PONY racing in Devon and Cornwall got under way at a wet, windy and cold Blackforest Lodge with the 138cm race going to Robert Williams on Oscar who travelled down from the Gelligaer Farmers in Wales. Robert, 13, beat Chloe Grove, 13, on Summertime Blaze from the Silverton, a regular campaigner in the area's races and a previous winner at Cheltenham. Ten-year-old Hannah Welch, 10, was third on her new pony Superted who was really running on at the end, and her cousin, Barney Treneer, was fourth on Wish Upon A Star. Both the latter were qualified with the Dartmoor.

Robert Williams was out of luck in the 148 race, denied any chance of a double, as he took a tumble on Drama Queen when the pair had a bit of a disagreement about which side of a marker to go. The race was won in fine style by Bryony Frost, another Dartmoor qualifier, on her regular partner Jack Sparrow. Bryony looks like accumulating plenty more wins this season as the pony won readily. Joe Ponting, 11, another who had travelled a long way, from the Curre and Llangibby, was second on Chinglarna and Pippa Glanville, another from the Dartmoor, was third on Champagne Charlie.

The next pony races in the Devon and Cornwall area will be held at the Dart Vale and Halden Harriers races at Buckfastleigh. Details from Mrs Eileen Ashby (01548) 53149. Entry forms and information are available on www.fredsampson.co.uk Charles Owen pony racing fixture leaflets are available by sending an A5 SAE to Lee Glanville, South Battisborough Farmhouse, Holbeton, Plymouth PL8 1JY
