Zetland at Witton Castle
Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May 2016

by Will Milburn

This weekend was the Zetland Point to Point held at Witton Castle and as has been the same for most of this season Will Easterby continued his march on the Yorkshire championship with a double and has also notched himself into second place for the National championship.

His first winner came in the Restricted aboard Stagecoach Jasper, the 10yo has spent a long career trying to win and like buses he has recorded back to back victories, the pair made all the running and despite Market Road trying to close the gap all the way up the running, the leader stayed on well to win. Third went to On Vacation and John Dawson.

His second winner came courtesy of Camden in the Men's Open, the pair were sent off the very skinny 1/2 favourite and after moving easily into the race the pair galloped clear from two out to win by 15 lengths, this was the 10yo third victory of the season and is now making up for his laclustre effort in the Cheltenham Foxhunters. Second went to the early pace setter Probably George, whilst Royal Deal in typical fashion tailed himself off in the early stages and stayed on well at the end when the race was over.

There was an upset in the Intermediate race as 20-1 outsider Wizadora made most of the running under Jacqueline Coward, the pair have failed to make much of an impact so far this season but has finally got her head in front, second went to Christy Furness and Fairy Mix and this has gone some way to sealing the novice championship with only two Yorkshire meetings left, whilst back in third was Mistissio and Richard Smith and despite some good efforts of late he is struggling to get his head in front. Favourite Four Oceans can be forgiven a below par effort after having his fourth outing in as many weeks.

The Ladies Open was a very easy success for Sposalizio under Kelly Bryson, the pair travelled strongly and quickened clear on the run to the last and win easily, Trop Fort and Jacqueline Coward was a good second, whilst Clonea Power was back in third. It was a timely result for trainer Chris Dawson who only last suffered a nasty fall at Easingwold and under went an eight hour operation last week due to injuries, luckily Chris was on hand to see this useful Open horse win.

The Members race was a welcome winner for Andrew Glass who piloted Lord Of The Course to success, always handy the pair took advantage of a bad mistake from favourite Drill Sergeant in the home straight and win well, Drill Sergeant is becoming a frustrating individual, a talented recruit who is best known for pulling himself up at Haydock under Sir Tony McCoy.

The final race was the Open Maiden and Twelveoclockhigh finally got off the mark for Cath Walton, the pair moved well into the race and stayed on well and win by an impressive 15 lengths, from Midnight Milly and Christy Furness who again continues his good run of form, whilst third went to See Mores Finale.
