Lamerton
Kilworthy near Tavistock
Sunday 21st March 2010
by Granville Taylor

THE Lamerton attracted a total of 62 runners for their six races at Kilworthy where rain softened ground put a premium on stamina.

Sheriff Roscoe justified favouritism in the Mixed Open, ridden by his trainer Richard Woollacott. Minella Tipperary was upsides the winner when unseating Katherine Hobbs five fences out, but Stone Valley looked a real threat when delivering his challenge at the second last. Sheriiff Roscoe went on to shake off his challenger on the climb to the post to give his jockey his eleventh winner of the season. The ten-year-old gelding had run well on his previous appearance in a Taunton hunter chase and owner John Symes expects him to return to that sphere for his next run.

Bude based Tim Dennis achieved his first training double thanks to Alambique and Brook Castle. The former point-to-point jockey turned out Alambique looking a picture to win the Hunt race after a three years lay off. 18 year old Lee Drowne was partnering his first winner on the eleven year old who, “has had lots of niggling problems since his last run”. His success is very much a Dennis family affair – “mum and dad have been riding him at home”, added the trainer.

Brook Castle completed the Dennis double in the Confined, initiating a first ever riding double for Joe Tickle. The odds-on favourite Bannow Strand could only finish fourth, as Brook Castle shrugged off the attentions of Lisheen Storm on the run in. Brook Castle is owned by Alan and Carolyn Colwill in company with John Nancekivell. “He stays well and could go for a novice hunter chase”, said the connections.

22 year old Joe Tickle, who works for Nick Williams, completed his double with a dogged success on Print The Money in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate qualifier. In the closest finish of the day, Tickle’s mount looked vulnerable as the well backed Turtle Tim was produced to challenge by Neil Harris. Print The Money responded gamely however and got on top in the last 50 yards to score by a neck. Owned by Charlie Rush, and trained to the minute by Becky Kennen, this ex-Irish pointer is now unbeaten in his three runs this season.

17 runners faced the starter in the Restricted which saw Pendoun and Sam Allwood just prevailing over Lord Lescribaa (Katherine Hobbs). The winner was bought as a yearling by Sally Alford and is yet another winner turned out by Polly Gundry and Ed Walker. With Polly riding at Ston Easton, Ed was on duty and explained that his charge, “had not seen a course for nearly two years after picking up a leg injury in the field”.

There was also a double figure field for the Confined Maiden which resulted in a deserved victory for Lucette Annie. Jamie Thomas jumped the mare off in front and she stayed there throughout, resisting the challenge of True Tara in the home straight. Lucette Annie is trained at Poundsgate by Simon Partridge for owners Chris and Janet Humphrey who had seen their six-year-old finish runner up five times in her short career.
