North Cornwall
Wadebridge
Saturday 23rd January 2010
by Granville Taylor

THE Nikki Frost yard continued in good form at Wadebridge as Sporting Rebel and Glacial Call repeated their Ideford Arch December double. Glacial Call had also been successful at the previous meeting on the showground, so his third win of the season took the yard’s score to a commendable five at this early stage of the campaign.

“We managed to keep the horses going in the freeze up and I must give credit to Jamie Thomas and Daisy Sharp who worked my horses in their lunch breaks”, said the winning trainer.

Promising youngster Jamie Thomas had Sporting Rebel in front virtually throughout to win the Men’s Open at the expense of Ellies Horse and Holly Walk. Richard Hawkins, who is based with Chris Down, has also made the most of his opportunities and was steering Glacial Call home for the third time this season in the Confined. “He jumped well again on this tacky ground”, reported the rider.

Mulligan’s Pet was another to follow up his course victory before Christmas under a strong ride from his trainer Polly Gundry in the Restricted. Polly reported that her string had missed full work for a fortnight in the bad weather, but had been kept going on the horse walker twice a day.

Sericina was an impressive winner of the Ladies’ Open. Owned by Mendip Farmers’ joint master Michael Sheppard, seven-year-old Sericina is likely to be aimed at hunter chases later this season. She was ridden by her trainer Chloe Roddick, who has about a dozen pointers in her care at Wellow near Bath.

Suzy Berry was another lady rider to shine. Riding for the first time since injuring a shoulder at Ideford Arch, Suzy’s fitness was tested to the full as her mount Matako fought for his head throughout the Intermediate. He was allowed to stride on at the fourth last and was soon well in command of his three rivals.

The Open Maiden had to be divided on the day. Newcomer The Boss looked a smart prospect when winning the first section under Neil Harris. This strong five-year-old was bought in Ireland and is trained by Camilla Scott for his trio of lady owners Sally Messer-Bennetts, Clare Hall and Chick Gilbert. Charming Gael just held the late thrust of Rapid Pete to win the second section to give 16-year-old Michael Heard his first winning ride. Michael works for top trainer Paul Nicholls, and the family horse Charming Gael is owned by his parents John and Sandra in company with his grandfather Ken. John trains the gelding near Okehampton.

The Hunt race went to Print the Money who won easily in the hands of Joe Tickle. This Irish maiden winner, owned by Charlie Rush, is trained on Bodmin Moor by Becky Kennen. The seven-year- old was acquired from former jockey Jim Culloty in Ireland.
