Cornwall Hunt Club
Wadebridge
Saturday 12th December
by Granville Taylor

INNOCENT Rebel and Ellies Horse landed a double for the Boscastle yard of Karyn Heard at the Cornwall Hunt Club meeting at Wadebridge.

Innocent Rebel was always prominent and fought off the challenge of Perouse on the run-in. “He is blowing a bit and I think he needed it, we have managed to keep working on the all weather as the grass gallops are too wet”, reported Karyn. Claire Allen said that her mount, “relaxed into a nice rhythm and jumped well”. The 2007 lady point-to-point champion jockey has been globetrotting this year, finishing runner up in the international Fegentri series for amateur riders’ She was riding on the flat in Mauritius last weekend.

Ellies Horse hardly broke sweat in winning the Intermediate under Sam Allwood. Karyn Heard described him as, “a big strong monster at home but a lot better mentally this year”. The long term plan is the Red Mills Intermediate Final.

A damaged wrist kept Richard Woollacott out of the opening Black Forest meeting, but his first ride of the new season proved a winner with Come What Augustus in the Men’s Open. Bill Westacott’s seven-year-old is not an easy ride and fully tested his rider’s fitness, needing to be driven from half way to catch Barney Blue and Prince de Bursy close home. “He is such hard work but I knew he would stay”, commented Woollacott, who also trains the gelding.

Polly Gundry also got off the mark for the season when Mulligan’s Pet just overhauled Cool Cliché in a section of the Maiden, which was split on the day. Three jumps were omitted here due to the low sun, but only two of the eight starters completed.

Glacial Call, trained by Nikki Frost for owner Jane Brake, jumped his rivals into oblivion in the other division to give 20-year-old Richard Hawkins his third career winner. The young rider, whose brother Giles is doing so well as a conditional, is attached to Chris Down’s Cullompton yard and looks to have a bright future.

Fully Loaded is proving to be a dream schoolmaster for Emma and Lucy Pugsley. After Emma had opened her account on the gelding at Black Forest two weeks ago, her 18-year-old sister was also successful on her first ride in the Club Novice Rider’s event. “I thought I had given him too much to do down the hill”, seemed an under statement as she toiled some 15 lengths adrift of the leaders entering the home bend. Her mount found overdrive to jump the last full of running on the heels of The Venetian, Sporting Rebel and Lisheen Storm, and swept past these rivals inside the last 100 yards. Lucy rides out for Camilla and Jeremy Scott during her current gap year, and eventually plans to study sports sciences at university.

Crofton repelled the challenge of Praise Hymn to win the Restricted under 21-year-old Josh Harris. The winner is the only pointer owned and trained by Josh’s mother Michelle at Chepstow, and the family was paying their first visit to the course. “I didn’t think Crofton was quite ready and Josh didn’t really want to make the running but it all turned out fine in the end”, said Michelle.
