Four Burrow
Trebudannon
Saturday 24th April 2010
by Granville Taylor

Richard Woollacott looks assured of another Devon & Cornwall title this season, and kept in touch in his quest for the National title with a double at the Four Burrow to take him to the 20 winner mark.

Deimne provided him with the first leg of his double with an easy win in the Mares Maiden. This seven-year-old was bought for only £700 at Ascot sales and is trained by Pauline Geering for a Tavistock based syndicate headed by Roger Knowles.

Woollacott had to work much harder in the Restricted, just getting five-year-old Deb’s Dasher home after a neck and neck battle from the last with Joe Tickle on Rockfield Boy. “He is still immature and will be a nice horse”, said the rider, who also bred and trains the horse for joint owners Deborah Bean and Sonia Gardener.

Ross Oliver’s Oscatello followed up his course win on Easter Monday with a seven lengths success in the PPORA race. Formerly a useful winner under rules, Oscatello has been with his current owner/trainer since last Christmas and was giving 21-year-old Ed Barrett his second success. Oliver, who trains near the course said, “It has been too firm to work him so he has just been walking round the roads this week to keep him fit”.

Ben Robarts finished runner up in the PPORA race on Mioche D’Estruval, but went one better in the Mixed Open with Prince de Bersy who accounted for Alambique and Henri Prends Garde. The winner is jointly owned by the rider and Ruth Burrow, and was following up his Wadebridge victory last month. Relieved trainer Ashley Farrant commented, “We have had so many seconds this season, it is nice to get another winner”.

The Open Maiden had to be divided on the day with 10 runners in each section. Vicky Wade rode her first winner on her father Keith’s Light Touch in one of the divisions. Vicky works for Jeremy Scott and trains the winner adjacent to the Scott yard at Brompton Regis. Stealing Moments won the other section, giving Ryan Bliss his fourth winner of the season. The winner is the only pointer in training with Alison Holland at Langport, Somerset, and is owned by Alison and her husband Gary. “I bought him at Ascot and he was as cheap as chips, he is a family pet and spends most of his time plodding round his field at home”, laughed the delighted trainer.

A bevy of lady owners greeted their five-year-old Delta Borget after his impressive win in the Maiden for young horses. “The Here Comes The Girls Partnership” is a 12 strong syndicate headed by trainer Leslie Jefford’s wife Lisa, who said afterwards that she hopes to find enough extra owners to buy another pointer for next season to expand the partnership. Delta Borget was bought in France last autumn and was ridden by the in-form Jo Buck.
