Ground staff put in a huge effort to obtain decent racing ground and this action paid dividends for near perfect conditions when the Blankney Hunt held there Point to Point meeting at Garthorpe on Saturday.
Six horses went to post for the opening race, The Confined, sponsored by Beckside Builders of Lincoln. Ungaretti, from the Hutchinson stable always looked to have a little in hand and well ridden by the trainer’s son, Sam, held off the fast finishing, Tom’s Party, the mount of Guy Brewer by three quarters of a length.
John Martin-Hoyes, also of Lincoln were sponsors for The Ladies Open race. Although only five went to post all had decent form this year and as expected the race was a competitive affair. Early leader, Free, also from the Hutchinson yard, set a furious pace until favourite, Beet De Bob took over with three fences left to jump. However the Middleton eight year old, Charlies Memory, coming with a well timed run, drew clear over the last to win by a couple of lengths. This race was run in the fastest time of the day.
Six horses were declared for The Mens Open race and this was won by the 12 year old, Emperor Roscoe, who had unseated his rider on this course recently when in a clear lead. On this occasion however, rider Jon Day, always had the gelding in touch and won the race by ten lengths. Tender Tangle and Quality First took the minor placings. Streets Chartered Accountants were sponsors here.
Next race up was The Restricted Race and a good field of ten went to post. Velcourt Farm Management kindly sponsored this race. The race produced a fine finish between the two market leaders. Rathmoley, ridden by top Garthorpe jockey, Stuart Morris, was happy to sit behind leader Firion King, the mount of promising rider Mica Woods early on. However Firion King kept finding extra and won the race with a couple of lengths to spare. This was both horse and rider’s second victory this season at Garthorpe.
The Open Maiden Race, for four, five, six & seven year olds produced the largest field of the day when 11 runners went to post. This produced an unusual stir in the betting market when substantial money came for the Philip York trained Ambrosinni. However the horse took a tumble early on when in midfield and the race was eventually won by Ruckholme, ridden by Clare Allen, from Clintos and Sandy Lie. Mr & Mrs Oliver Griffin sponsored this one.
Only four when to post for the final race, The Open Maiden Race for eight year olds and over. This went to the Patrick Millington ridden Dromin, who had been in the frame in four of his last five races. Vulcan’s Ash and Irishtown Leader finished second and third. The race was sponsored by Pygott & Crone of Boston.
