SPOONERS & WEST DARTMOOR FOXHOUNDS
CHERRYBROOK, TAVISTOCK
Sunday 10th April 2005
by Lee Glanville

Nick Williams, on board two Richard Barber trained horses, Smart Cavalier and Classify, completed an impressive double at the picturesque Cherrybrook course where the Spooners and West Dartmoor held their point to point on Sunday.

Classify notched up a 20 length victory over his nearest rival in the Intermediate race, with Williams spending almost as much time looking over his shoulder as he did looking in front! Neil Harris, on board Sherwood Rose, a horse bang in form which travelled down from the Croome and West Warks, weren't able to get in much of a blow, and third place Rio Grande was a further distance back in third.

Smart Cavalier was denied a win at Ottery St Mary earlier this season when falling at the last fence but he made no such blunder at Cherrybrook, winning the first division of the split-on-the-day Restricted by 10 lengths. Wendys Dynamo (Mark Munrowd) continues to improve and finished third.

Longdown based rider and trainer Lucy Gardner also notched up a double. She took the Mixed Open on board her aunt, Roma Cook's North Cornwall qualified Hasten Bak - the soft ground taking its toll on many of the big guns in this race, and following up on her own Tsar's Twist in the young horses' maiden.

The second division saw a back-to-back win for Bude's Tim Dennis on his father's Lord Americo seven year old Stars 'N' Stripes. The pair won a maiden at Great Trethew last time out, and had the best of a strong race run in the same time as the mixed open. On His Toes (Will White) appreciated the soft going and continued his improvement to finish second.

Gordon Chambers' horses are in fine fettle and Mystic Warrior, also loving the testing conditions, took the novice riders' race under Ian Chanin.

Apple Pie Lady, another by Lord Americo, took the older horses' confined maiden for trainer Andrew Congdon ridden by his daughter Jennifer. Apple Pie Lady finished a good third at the first East Cornwall meeting where she was dismounted after she crossed the line, a tendon injury feared. However, the mare had only knocked herself and should improve again for this run.

Verity Nicholls trained the winner of the opening members' race, Virgos Bambino ably partnered by Sarah Gaisford who was notching up her first win of the season after a string of seconds.
